that run on petrol, electricity, or alternative fuels such
as ethanol. Automotive service technicians’ and mechanics’
responsibilities have evolved from simple mechanical repairs
to high-level technology-related work. The increasing sophistication
of automobiles requires workers who can use computerized shop
equipment and work with electronic components while maintaining
their skills with traditional hand tools.

service and repair industries. Employment opportunities include
such areas as:
Auto technician: diagnoses
problems, replaces parts or performs adjustments on automobiles
for an auto dealership (Ford, Holden, Mazda, etc.) or independent
repair facility (Autotune, K-Mart service centres, etc.)
Auto specialist: works
in a specialised area such as engine repair, electrical, brakes,
wheel alignment, tune-up, air-conditioning or transmission
repair
Parts specialist: works in a larger
shop or parts distribution business processing and despatching
parts for automobiles Serviced manager: meets customers and
works with the technicians to help diagnose and locate trouble
areas, and supervises shop activities
